Ume - Houston
About This Spot
Stepping into Ume feels like discovering a quiet gem tucked just off Houston’s vibrant Hike & Bike trail. The space carries an unhurried calm, inviting you to leave the bustle behind and settle into an experience where each detail — from light touches of wood and soft lantern glow to the gentle hum of conversation — encourages a mindful savoring of the moment.
The mood here strikes a thoughtful balance between intimate and lively, perfect for a casual evening or a special date night. Whether seated at the sushi bar, where the delicate choreography of chefs shaping fresh fish and rice unfolds like a quiet performance, or at a cozy table, the rhythms of the room are warm and attentive without feeling formal or rigid.
Dining at Ume feels less like ticking through a menu and more like entering a conversation with the sea’s delicate bounty. Plates arrive with thoughtful artistry — the subtle interplay of textures and flavors in starters like marinated seaweed salads or the nuanced warmth of miso soup feel like small revelations rather than just dishes. The sushi offerings are a study in freshness and precision, often featuring rare cuts and delicate seasonings that highlight the fish’s natural character. Fresh wasabi, a hint of yuzu, or a brush of nikiri glaze brings an understated brightness that lingers well after the bite.
What strikes visitors most is the coordinated ease among the staff; the service feels effortlessly knowledgeable, offered by people who clearly delight in guiding guests through the menu with gentle enthusiasm and care. This thoughtful attentiveness deepens the relaxed mood, making you feel both welcomed and well tended to without ever being rushed.
Whether you’re a longtime sushi aficionado or a curious newcomer, this is a place to slow down and savor not just the food, but the quietly joyous human moments around it — the shared smiles, the subtle nods between chefs and servers, the effortless flow of an evening drawn out in good company and even better bites.

We went for my wife's birthday and it was a wonderful experience. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable about everything he brought out. The restaurant itself has a great atmosphere and is perfect for a night out or date night.

We tried this place for the first time this Saturday for lunch. Amazing lunch specials on sake , cocktails, and food. $15 for three rolls sushi - great price and high-quality! Service was outstanding. Thank you, Tina, our waitress.

Went here last night for the first time. We were just walking down the Hike & Bike trail and figured we wanted sushi. So glad we stopped in. Tina was our server and she was a delight. The food was incredibly good. They have several cuts of fish which I haven’t seen hardly anywhere around here. I have to say more than the food was the teamwork that impressed us. Everyone worked so well together. It was like precision clock work. Would love to go back. Give this place a try!

This is our new favorite sushi restaurant since we moved from Dallas 6 months ago and it is truly NEXT LEVEL! Love that the owner is onsite daily, the waitstaff is amazing and we love the ambiance of this restaurant. We did sit at the sushi bar on one of our visits and really enjoyed watching the chefs work. The sushi is innovative, so fresh and the desserts are amazing! It is a bit pricey but well worth the quality and presentation of the food. Our vegetarian daughter was even able to find yummy food to eat here. If we are not there weekly, we are there every other week. The happy hour is also really good! Thank you UME! We support you and we hope others will visit, enjoy and support you as well!

Ume Sushi has a beautiful space with intricate woodwork and a cozy atmosphere, but our experience had some highs and lows. We went for Friday date night and found street parking nearby, though valet is available. The restaurant was busy at first but emptied out halfway through our meal. We were seated right away without a reservation, which was nice. Service was friendly, but it was slow. Our server oddly blamed the wait on the Rodeo--even though the restaurant was half-empty at that point. The table was small, making it hard to fit everything. At one point, the server put my menu on the floor leaning against my chair, which was strange. For drinks, I had the Tequila Old Fashioned ($14)--boozy, but I like tequila, so it worked. We tried a variety of dishes: +Chutoro Hasu ($19) - Medium fatty tuna with fried lotus chip and yuzu kosho aioli. +Salmon/Tuna Avocado Ball ($9) - With truffle mousse and gold flake. +Hamachi Serrano Roll ($17) - Spicy yellowtail, cucumber, cilantro, topped with hamachi, masago, and serrano. +MF Box Roll ($23) - Lobster tempura with Japanese mayo, scallions, and eel sauce. +Grilled Wagyu Shortrib Stuffed Shishito ($20) +Kinoko Skewer ($4) - With scallion butter. +Negitoro Nigiri ($8 each) - Fatty tuna, soy, scallions, wrapped in seaweed. +Sake Nigiri ($6 each) - Fresh salmon with nikiri, truffle aioli, pepper, and micro celery. The food was good, but not outstanding. I was hoping for something more memorable, but we actually left a little hungry and had to grab dessert elsewhere. Ume Sushi is solid, and I'd like to try more menu items. With so many great Japanese spots in Houston, I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to return.
